Hedgewitch by Skye McKenna

5.0

Hedgewitch centers around Cassie Morgan, a young girl in a boarding school in London. There she is ignored, bullied, and only has a few books for company. But when the headmistress calls her in with some bad news, Cassie takes this as her opportunity to run away. She soon finds herself in a some town where the lines between magic and reality, danger and safety, and family and foes runs thin.

I absolutely adored the magic system created by Skye McKenna. It was simple enough that younger readers would be able to understand it, but also stands out amongst other similar books. I'm not sure if it was intensional, but I caught a few Harry Potter references (i.e. sharing sandwiches on trains). I felt like McKenna paid homage to past classic witch books like the Harry Potter series, Kiki's Delivery Service, and more.

And is it shallow? But the cover is gorgeous and those foil designs on the cover are to die for!
