Damrosch teaches at Harvard and is the guru of 'World Literature'. I've read some of his academic work, which is excellent, but this one is aimed at general readers, using the concept of Verne's around the world journey to look at a range of interesting books. Damrosch offers perspectives that are worth reading, even for books that I was already very familiar with, and he also has some choices that I'd never heard of before and will be checking out.
