Dan Versus Nature by Don Calame
3.0

Did you ever want to read a book that is one-part Jackass and one-part the camping scene from The Parent Trap? Well you have interesting taste and also this book will be right up your alley.

Our main character, Dan, is getting a new step-father. He barely knows the man (his mom introduces him and the engagement in the same sitting) but he knows that he is just like all of her other deadbeat boyfriends. So, with his (frankly sociopath) best friend, he decides to humiliate new SD into breaking it off with his mom.

Actually, most of the pranks are probably more humiliating for Dan which is kind of a good thing because anyone one can tell that (spoilers but come on it is obvious):
SpoilerSD is a good guy. He is lying about one thing but it is minor compared to all the suffering Dan and his friend put him though

The absolutely worst part of this novel is the best friend. He is absolutely insufferable. He is a complete know-it-all and speaks like a dictionary is being vomited from his mouth. His investment in torturing not only the SD but also his best friend is baffling. And worse:
SpoilerHe gets rewarded with an equally annoying girlfriend.

Despite the negatives of this novel, it does has some moments of emotional honesty. It was also nice to read a book in my teen reading challenge that is unquestioningly for teen boys. A mild recommendation for anyone looking for some gross-out humor books.
