The Candid Life of Meena Dave by Namrata Patel
3.0
3.5/5⭐️
I liked this book, but I didn't love it.
This book follows Meena, a photojournalist, with no permanent address and no close relationships. The story follows her journey of finding herself and discovering her heritage/culture as she moves into a new apartment building.
The plot was interesting and I was invested in it at first, but I quickly became bored with the story. I struggled a bit to get through this book, I just found it was too slow for my personal taste. I'm also more of a romance reader (more like strictly romance reader but whatever) and was hoping to have a bit more romance throughout, but that's really just personal preference. Sam was really sweet though and I quite liked his character a lot. I found the mystery aspect of this book to be quite predictable; however, I found I didn't mind that it was. The book is more focused on Meena finding herself and her cultural identity, than it is on the mystery plot line, so for me the book being predictable wasn't a bad thing at all. All that being said, I still liked the plot and the book overall.
The characters were what I liked about this book the most. I really enjoyed Meena as a character and liked reading about her journey. Sam was very sweet and definitely swoon worthy, I absolutely loved him. The book also featured some strong side characters that were all unique and interesting to read about in their own ways.
Overall, this was a decent read and I'd recommend it to people who are looking for a book about a young woman discovering her Indian culture, that features a cute romance sub-plot.
