The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
4.25
dark emotional informative inspiring mysterious sad tense medium-paced

About midwife Martha Ballard and her diaries circa late 1700s. This is not an autobiography but Ariel Lawhon gives life to this woman and women of that time in such an honest, gritty and compassionate way. Terrific storytelling by a masterful writer. Highly recommend reading the author's note at the end of the book once you have read the book first as it gives further insight into the story.

** Definitely take note of content warnings as this book details some disturbing scenes and has challenging (albeit important) themes.
