This author is one of a select few that I stop everything to read her book within days of it being released. There is something about how she can weave a story with characters that are mind-boggling complex. They are perfection juxtaposed with flawed. She shows the duality of redemption and damnation. Even as flawless that these characters are or the story is that she writes, it is in the imperfections that the story shines. There was so much that I loved about this story. Mila and Lucas were stunning and totally devoted to their love. A love, mind you, that was sublime in a world where illusions were key. Was their marriage perfect? No. Yet, their devotion and connection are. They proved that love needs to be cultivated and nourished.
I struggled with parts of this book because I truly had a hard time following what was going on. especially about the secret and why Blake did what he did. I wanted more of the story told from the present and what had led them to the now. The continual flashbacks of their relationship were good to a certain point but it got excessive in my opinion. Yes, they were important to showing how Mila and Lucas fell in love but I am still unclear in certain parts about how they applied to the "secret" and why Lucas felt compelled to use that in his "method" of acting.
Was this my favorite book by this author? No. Not even close. However, it still was beautifully crafted in a way that is only done by this amazing author. The way that she phrases certain ways in order to paint a picture always take my breath away. Would I recommend this book? Yes, only because of the sheer beauty in which this author writes is pure magic. Would it be the first book I recommended for a new person just getting started on works by this author? No. I would start them on another book but I WOULD make sure that they did eventually read this book because once they have read the first book then they would be a fan. And as any fan knows, once you read one you have to read them all.
