The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

5.0

I'm rating this 5 stars because the plot was intriguing and unfortunately, very prescient for the year 2022. It is a tale told in generalities bc the narrator isn't fully aware of everything, so we just get her overarching view of the situation. It's very everyday person caught up in a wave of changes so big that they didn't see it coming until it was too late to do anything about it. The underlying themes and plot are truthfully terrifying. Giliad was supposed to be this place that was so farfetched, so out there, so unbelievable that it couldn't be true. It's not something that we want to think of as being able to happen, but it's scary the things that are happening in our country today wouldn't be out of place as a stepping stone to get there in this fictional world. That christian nationalism/fascism would ever be a problem in the "real world" is what made this story such a good read in the past. Now it's not just a good story. It's a possible dystopian nightmare, and that's what makes it worth 5 stars.
