Caraval
by Stephanie Garber
It's a twisting and turning magical realism novel, ideal for YA readers. My husband and I listened to it in the car driving to Pittsburgh. He predicted more of the plot twists than I did. I was disappointed by the super twists at the end, feeling like the rug got pulled out from under me. At times both of us found the main character to be annoying, not the brightest bulb and too honest in the sense that she would immediately play her cards. When she learned something or figured out a secret, she revealed it aloud right away.
I enjoyed the book, especially the creativity of the Caravel game like buying things with secrets or days of your life. I think fans of Hunger Games, the fourth Harry Potter, and Court of Thorn and Roses would also enjoy this book.
