The List of My Desires
by Grégoire Delacourt
Another book club book, based on a recommendation by the lovely Kirsten. A quirky enjoyable story - translated from French - about Jocelyne, a lady "deep in middle age" (she's 47! I thought the 40s were the new 30s?), who has a quiet life with her husband and owns a haberdashery shop, then wins 18 million Euros in the lottery and doesn't tell anyone. She does however make a list of things she needs, which are sweetly ordinary given her millionaire status - a new pair of tweezers, a new microwave etc. Jocelyne's lists evolve over the course of the book (as she herself evolves) - from a list of simple needs, to a more ambitious wish list, to a list of crazy notions and, finally, to a list of her heart's desires.
Although the plot twist is revealed about 2/3 of the way through the story, The List of My Desires is such a quick read that I didn't feel like I waited very long to find out what that twist was!
In essence, this is a story about coming to terms with oneself and one's life. Perfect reading for your commute to work on public transport, or a short flight.
