The Silver Linings Playbook
by Matthew Quick
Admittedly, I have seen the movie at least 10x and I had not read the book. Guilty, I know. But I decided to finally listen to the audiobook.
Pat is one of my favorite main characters in a book because of his attitude/personality, internal dialog, and bluntness. I'm not actually sure I like Tiffany all that much, but she's the perfect complement to Pat's optimism and ignorance.
Pat's insistence on constantly comparing his life to a movie and expecting things to happen cinematically is the most heart-wrenching part of this story. The reader isn't really pushed to want Nikki and Pat to be together again, but Pat's mental state and expectations for a happy ending put a lot of emotion into this story. It's all evened out by the dialog and comedic relief, though.
Maybe it was the narrator of the audiobook, but more so I think it was the material... it was hilarious. I laughed especially hard at Pat's thoughts during and after reading The Bell Jar. It's ok, Pat, I too wanted to rip The Bell Jar in half.
There are some significant differences between the book and movie (most significantly the dance competition), but I enjoyed that they weren't identical. There's much more time spent on the relationship between Pat and his brother. LOVED the montage scene that Pat laid out to explain the dance practice month.
