I imagined the cell the second chess player was interogated in such picturesque that I think the reason for it was the authors also picturesque language. It is to note that he was held captive by the nazis.
The author himself fled from the nazi regime and killed himself over the fact that this change of history inflicted a tragedy on his life.

I've found this book on a random Fleamarket near the metro station Giselastraße.
