I liked how fresh and unique this book felt compared to so much of the YA Fantasy I've read. It felt more like a dystopian steampunk than anything, but I liked the unique magic system and how intricate some elements of the world-building were. It focused on friendship and not at all on romantic relationships, which I also loved.

However, I do think the story felt slow. The plot and emotional depth of the relationships simply wasn't developed enough. I didn't really get why Linnea was the way she was. I didn't truly understand the threat of the Scaroff because the stakes felt distant. I felt frustrated at how static the characters were for 75% of the book. These are relatively small things, but I think if they had been improved the story really could have shone.

Ultimately though, it was an engaging listen and I definitely just sat at my desk pretending to do work while I earnestly listened to the last two hours. Excited to see more from this author!
