The Price of Meat by KJ Charles

4.0

A very clever retelling of Sweeney Todd (although, it's a retelling in a universe where the text of Sweeney Todd's story also exists, and some of the characters only partially recognize the way they seem to be living out Sweeney Todd, but not that they have the same name as characters--you know what, don't think about it too hard).
K.J. Charles does an excellent job of taking fantastical-sounding things that really existed in history, like the lawless realm of Alsatia and the laughing disease kuru, and dialing them up to extremes for a very chilling horror tale.
