I love Jane Austen, she’s incredibly witty and her portrayal of awful characters shines through in such a comic way that it’s so much fun to read. The second part set in Northanger Abbey was very tongue in cheek and an obvious satirical take on the gothic novel which was very popular at the time, particularly ‘The Mysteries of Udolopho’ by Ann Radcliffe. I was HOOKED.
As for Catherine, she is so full of fancy and engrossed in her imagination, I was obsessed with her she’s such a silly goose. Isabella was the worst kind of snakey, fake ‘popular kid’, or in Catherine’s words a “vain coquette’…we all know one. Henry was a pretty boring suitor for someone as funny as Catherine but what’s new? I don’t even like romance as a genre and I generally steer clear of contemporary romance books, but gimme a Georgian romcom written by Austen any day.
