Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde

5.0

Wow. I can’t even begin to describe my experience with this book. It simultaneously broke my heart into a million pieces and renewed it just the same. First, I love the way that Indigenous Nigerian culture is woven into modern stories and folklore. I didn’t know much about Lagos or Nigerian mythology, so it was really interesting to learn as I read. The way that the stories are told by Tatafo (gossip), who reports to Éko (Lagos) is so clever.

Osunde weaves stories together so beautifully. This book could stand alone as a book of individual short stories if it wanted to. However, I love the way Osunde makes the stories intertwine. The second you forget about a character from 5 chapters ago, they’re back as the secret lover of the current main character.

I’ve already recommended this book to as many people as I can. I think there’s something for everyone in this book. There’s no single narrative or theme to “get” or take out of this. But whatever you do get out of it, you love. Simply gorgeous and a true 5 stars for me.
