Carissa Broadbent’s ability to create badass female leads is impeccable. I loved the character development in this book so much and I’m excited to see where these characters go next. I mean, Nura? I loved how confusing this character was and I’m so excited to see what else she has up her sleeves (besides daggers). I can’t wait to learn more about Sammerin as well, his magic is so damn cool. The magic system in the whole book is amazing! I love how visceral a lot of it is, how ugly and dark it gets. Broadbent takes a conventional and easily understandable magic system and turns it on its head. It’s awesome. And gross. And I loved it. The romance was convincing, but I once again enjoyed how Broadbent chose to deliver romance without this ever feeling like a romance novel (I feel the same about The Serpent and the Wings of Night). This wasn’t a story about love, it was about a badass heroine getting revenge, getting angry, and doing what she set out to do.
