Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow

adventurous dark emotional sad medium-paced

5.0

"the world runs on kindness. It simply has to, or we'd never be able to bear ourselves"
this story is beautifully told in my opinion. it's realistic but also hopeful.
i love that after she got out of the facility, things seemed to look up for her but then it eventually becomes messy again, because that's life.
it's sad and depressing and frustrating but progress is not linear. to quote felix,
"for a long time, you gather pieces. and it takes such a very long time, not to fit them back together, but to assemble them in a new way, not necessarily a better way. more, a way you can live with until you know for certain that this piece should go there, and that one there."

the importance of girl friendships in this also does not go unnoticed. the fact that charlie really started to get better once blue comes into the picture physically, right after louisa's quote about "a girl's life is the worst life in the world" is mentioned really captures the essence of being a girl. you just have to find your people to make this world feel a little better.

also, the author's note made me bawl my eyes out.
