Girl in the Blue Coat
by Monica Hesse
this book had been on my list and i was hoping it would be a quick read in between volumes of the humongous tome i'm also reading. i didn't even realize it was considered a YA book (though i'm not sure whether it was intended to be or whether that label was thrust upon it because it has a young protagonist). in any case it did a nice job of showcasing the nuanced reactions to war and the resistance movement. i'd never really considered what it would be like to come of age in the midst of such a turbulent time (clearly i've never read anne frank) but this book captures it well. worth a read whether you're a 'young adult' or not.
