Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

4.0

Can you believe, as a middle school English teacher, this is my first time reading Hatchet ? Embarrassing, I know. Also, the fact that the only reason I read it is because I decided to teach is as a whole-class novel. Let me preface my review with the statement that I am EXTREMELY passionate about teaching my students using diverse literature. However, our approved book list in my school district contains very very little of this. So, for what it's worth, I'm happy with this book.

It was highly engaging and allowed me to include read-aloud in my classroom, another thing I'm very passionate about. Hopefully it pushes some of my reluctant readers to have a positive memory related to in-class reading. In the future, I will aim to teach newer, socially relevent material, though.
