Midnighter (2015-) #1 by Steve Orlando, ACO
3.0
This is... a little confusing and a bit heavier than I thought it would be. From what I gather, Midnighter's not with his ex, Apollo, anymore and he's on the market for a new partner. Meanwhile, some mysterious lady, The Gardener, has been robbed of a bunch of important things and she wants Midnighter to help her get them back. Midnighter has a personal stake in what's been stolen, so he agrees to help.
The writing doesn't flow smoothly in some places and can feel a bit awkward to read. I wasn't being pulled in by the story or characters. The art is pretty cool, with nice colours, but can be too busy for my taste during action scenes.
I wanted to like this book. I'm excited about diversity and inclusion, and I always hope for the best when it comes to content and characters that increase representation. However, Midnighter is mildly disappointing. It's not a bad first issue, but it doesn't have the magic I'm looking for (the magic Constantine: The Hellblazer seems to have). I'll wait for the next issue.
