3.5

We’re in familiar territory here in Michaelides’s third book. In keeping with his previous novels there’s a Greek-heavy setting, characters that you never feel you should exactly trust, and 4 page chapters that are built to make you say “I could finish one more” until it’s midnight and your reading comprehension is dwindling. I loved The Silent Patient and The Maidens, but there was just something about this one that left me unfulfilled. The last four or five twists left me more confused than shocked, and the final ultimate actions each character takes to feel a sense of justice feel like nonsensical overreactions. I enjoyed the world building through the first 3/4ths of the book, but the payoff just felt overwrought to me. As a “more is more” kind of girl I’m surprised to say I would have enjoyed toning the final act down just a tad.

Additional note: if you haven’t read The Silent Patient yet read that first, lest you be greatly spoiled.
