My mother has always been an ardent reader of Steel's books but I never had the chance to pick them up. When @panmacmillanindia sent this book over couple of days ago, I was secretly happy that I could finally read her work. Silent night is an emotional read which talks about bonds that are built unexpectedly. This book about a woman and her niece, going through tough times while trying to figure out how they can make their lives work around each other, is a comfort read, one that you would prefer reading on a rainy day.

When Whitney is informed about her younger sister's Paige's death in an accident, she has to immediately cut short her vacation and rush back home. With Paige dead, Whitney is now the only living guardian of her niece, Emma Watts who is a renowned child actor in a famous TV show. Paige had always groomed Emma to be the next superstar by prepping up for shows since a very young age. Emma had to sacrifice her childhood to fulfill the role of an actor, her days swamped with classes and shoots while she missed out on making friends outside the set. Whitney and Paige were poles apart ever since they were children. While Paige basked in the attention that her superstar mother brought, Whitney shied away from it almost immediately. So when Paige dies suddenly, Whitney knows she has to take responsibility of her niece.

Emma suffers from a severe brain injury due to the accident and slips into coma. Her recovery is a tough one, as she loses chunks of memory, forgets words and has to learn talking all over again. She was grabbed from the jaws of death and now Whitney has decided to protect her at any cost. The book talks about the struggles that the two of them face as they try to reign in their emotions while working on Emma's recovery. Whitney's personal and romantic relationships in the book talks about her insecurities. When you finish the book, there's a deep sense of calm that embraces you and I guess that's what Steel wanted the readers to feel. The writing was fairly simple and repetitive. The characters were predictable and so was the plot.
