The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

5.0

I didn’t like this book at first. The pacing seemed to drag, the protagonist wasn’t inherently likable, and as lovely as the prose was, I didn’t see the point of what was happening.

I don’t know exactly when that changed for me, but somewhere along the journey I couldn’t seem to let go of, the book got ahold of me.

It’s a quiet story, one of reflection, regret, and pride. Ishiguro’s writing is excellent, deceivingly simple, and achingly beautiful, and his story has roots in me now. The gentle tragedy that defines this novel is not something I’m going to be able to shake for some time.
