The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

3.0

I hadn’t read The Silent Patient before reading this, but now I really want to. Ive been in the mood for thrillers/mysteries lately and this was the perfect pick, especially since ive also been really into Greek Tragedy too.

Some holdbacks for me: I thought it was slow paced at first. It was hard to get into and see how characters related to each other. Im not really entirely sure what the point of having Mariana’s creepy patient be a character was? Why was he even involved? I think the author just wanted to weave his expertise with mental health into the narrative. Again on the pacing, it had a great pace in the middle. However that was the only time. The end came WAY too quickly and suddenly. The plot twist was unexpected and never elaborated on. This often happens when a twist is not there to actually further the story and its characters, but rather just there for the sake of having a ‘twist.’

Onto the good: I loved how Euripedes was weaved into the plot and I certainly didn’t expect the twist at the end. I hope this author writes more books using these tragic heroines from Greek Mythology and their intersection with real world violence and oppression. I do wish that we got to read more about Persephone and Demeter-that their hymns and rites were even moreso part of the book.
