The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang

This book is phenomenal. First a warning though: it is NOT for the faint hearted and comes with trigger warnings that I'm finding it difficult to get off my mind. The writing flows seamlessly and is easy to read, other than the UTTER PAIN you are put through! It's possibly the most I've cried while reading in my life.

I cared straight away about the characters and oh boy was it a painful rollercoaster of emotions, and difficult to put down. It starts with a slow pace, introducing us to our main characters, but I enjoyed every moment of it, including the couple of scenes that were a bit info-dumpy, because I was already so invested. Once the action gets going, WOW it is so awesome, I love the magic system and the fighting, and the emotional and physical fall-out of the violence is SO well done (and did i say, PAINFUL?)

Our main protagonist is Misaki, a housewife (and so much more!) and mother to four children (who are all different and so well depicted and who I adored), and she and her arc, around which the story is told, is so AWESOME. I related so hard to her in some ways (not at all in others!) and the ending, (while it is frustrating that there are some intriguing aspects of the world and players in it, that we are not getting further books about any time soon), really spoke to me (I cried...). The other main characters were all so well fleshed out. This world and the people in it felt so real that I've had to remind myself they're fictional, in order to temper my emotional PAIN.

Seriously though, pain notwithstanding, this was an AWESOME read that I thoroughly enjoyed and could not put down and HIGHLY recommend.
