Sailor Moon Eternal Edition 5 by Naoko Takeuchi

5.0

Wow, this is my favourite volume so far! The sailor guardian of the outer planets arrive and the conflict between them and Sailor Moon's team is tense and gripping.

But the real gift to me is Uranus and Neptune's queer relationship and Uranus' gender presentation. In the manga, and particularly in this translation, Uranus' is allowed to be the genderfluid character that they suppressed in the Anime from the 90s.

Uranus' presents sometimes aan and sometimes as a woman and the translator use whichever pronouns suit how Uranus is presenting at the moment.

I think what's remarkable about these characters is that even though their queerness was hidden from English-speaking audiences in the 90s, their queerness came through. They are role models of love, loyalty, strength, and steadfastness in the face of adversity. Uranus and Neptune were heros that young people were still able to project their queerness onto.
