This was unfortunately lackluster. While I do think the author was able to build quite a rich world in so few pages, I felt that the political conflict itself here didn’t live up to the stakes presented by the world, it also didn’t really develop any themes of imperial power struggle even when they were present.
The characters in this also felt pretty one note and I didn’t find the central romantic relationships compelling or believable at all, too much telling. That being said the main characters relationship with her mother was a bright light in this otherwise tedious novella.
