Normal People by Sally Rooney

5.0

First book of 2022 and it’s a five star review?!

I used to think books had to have flowery writing and adjectives upon adjectives upon adjectives to be immersive, to really feel like it was painting a picture for you. Sally Rooney’s writing is single-handedly changing my mind about that. Rooney’s strength is describing people, emotions, and incidentally the ‘normal’ things in life and in out surroundings that, although mundane, are the things that really bring our worlds to life.

‘Normal People’ was charming, and the main characters were flawed but easy to root for and love. It felt like a heartwarming (and at times heart-wrenching) portrayal of the complexities of love, friendship, how class, status and societal pressure can affect those things, and how communication is the single most important thing in any relationship.
