The Measure by Nikki Erlick
4.0

If you could know how long your life would be, would you choose to find out? How would your life change if you knew you only had a certain number of years remaining?

This book wrestles with the moral, ethical, political, and personal implications of just such a situation. Overnight, small boxes appear all over the world. Inside lies a string. Some strings are longer, some are shorter. Somehow, it is determined that the length of the string represents the length of life each person has remaining.

This book focuses on several New Yorkers and the way their lives change and intermingle once the boxes arrive. While some of the characters' threads were not too difficult to anticipate, others surprised me by the turn they took. It's a very character-driven story, and each character feels well developed.

This would have been a 5 star rating for me because it's a very thought-provoking book and one that I will continue thinking about for some time. However, two of the main characters are lesbian women, and another secondary character is pregnant with babies she's carrying for her gay brother and his husband. I don't enjoy reading about these types of relationships and so I am knocking my review down one star.
