UK author, Kathryn Croft delivers an intriguing mysterious psychological thriller, THE GIRL WITH NO PAST —keeping you glued to the pages from beginning to end.
Leah Mills is hiding from her past. She is living in a small flat in London and works at the library, a short walk away. Somewhat of a recluse, she is living under the radar. She was existing, rather than living. Idle time was a toxic for her. It meant her thoughts could get the better of her. She was keeping they at bay. She spends her evenings a home alone with a book and lives through her characters.
Once a week she volunteers at a care home, reading to the residents after dinner and keeping them company. She loved the way their faces lit up.
Maria, her friend had turned her on to Two Become One, a dating website. The curiosity got the better of her. At first she was an observer, of course not using her real name. She was convinced no one from her past would recognize her. She looked different now.
She meets someone online, Julian. He was thirty-six and lived in Bethnal Green. He revealed he was a civil servant and worked in Whitehall. She became nervous, not want to share too much. However, doesn’t she deserve to live a normal life?
Then, the Anniversary. An envelope. The only cards she received were from her Mum on her birthday and Christmas. She knew this was something she would not want to see. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. HER PAST had caught up with her. Twenty years.
Someone knows what happened. Someone knows her secret. Flashing from past to present, you wonder what happened. What did she do?
Years ago she was a typical teen, with a group of friends. Imogen, Imogen’s boyfriend Corey, and Leah’s first love, Adam--with deep-rooted psychological issues. Some mysterious mistake left her hiding all these years.
The author does an amazing job at supplying bits and pieces, spoon feeding the reader a little at a time, keeping you hooked to the end. The tone of the novel was mysterious, drawing you into this web of mystery; page-turning to find out the mystery and the final reveal----many red herrings and twists.
My first book by Croft -- enjoyed her style. I wish her back list were available on audible-- this is the way I catch up with previous books I missed -- sounds like this is an author to read and follow!
