Set on You
by Amy Lea
BRUUUUUUUHHHHH. Don't do it.
This. Book. Didn't. Know. What. It. Wanted. To. Be. About.
It both wasn't well enough thought out or narrowed down enough.
So many weird details about things that were not only unnecessary but often competed plot points/take aways from the story.
If I gotta hear about Scotty's abs one more time.
Her grandmama slick at the mouth and problematic as fuck.
I love Lizzo. But nobody listens to exclusively Lizzos music (playlist or otherwise). Her catalog simply ain't big enough yet. Act like you know more than one fat musical artist PLEASE.
Consistently random leaning into AAVE. Refusing to only refer to a butt as a booty and using the phrase "busted ass weave" while watching a real house wives show (NOT EVEN ONE OF THE BLACK CITIES SO NOBODY ON THE SCREEN EVEN SAID THAT).
Sprinkle in a magical negro from Atlanta.
But the two parts that reeeeeally made me wanna throw the whole thing away the book was supposedly about being happy even if you're fat but they avoided using the word fat when referring to anyone as if it was a cuss word. CAN WE PLEASE STOP USING THE WORD CURVY AND JUST REMOVE THE IMMEDIATE NEGATIVE CONNOTATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE WORD FAT?!
And the last thing...........
Crystal was afraid for Scotty to say what was so beautiful about her because she didn't want him to mention her light eyes because people always exotify her light eyes...................
EXOTIFYING HER LIGHT EYES?!
The above review is probably damn near unintelligible because this book just had me hot all the way through. ONLY read this if you wanna be angry. I'm not usually this rude in reviews but I honestly felt like the author was playin in my face with this one, I really do believe that.
Because, EXOTIFYING her LIGHT EYES?!
