Behold the Sins by Rachel Serrin

3.0

I received this arc in exchange for an honest review.

I will start with the things I loved about the book. The story is really cool. The idea behind it neat. It's like Hunger Games but instead of going to one place to battle, she has to go to several places. I love that there is a little bit of found family. I love the MC sass. I believe Rachel Serrin will go on to write amazing things.

What I really didn't like was the character development. There just wasn't much by way of making you really fall in love with ANY character. MC spends the first several chapters talking about how she has to go get her brother and how important he is, but the moment she is faced with something hard on the first world, she says is he really worth this? While this could just be chalked up to her personality quirk, I could never get past it. I think Violet is an OK character. I don't think there was enough back story/anything to make me feel anything for her.

Past MC, the other characters seem like copy-paste of the same type. They are bully, mean, out for their own agenda types. Seems like they are used just to further attempting to make you feel bad for MC. I had such a hard time even reading the beginning when Violet was forced to go to the ceremony. The side characters all feel like throwaways. Even when Violet is on Gluttony and finds Gwen, I have such a hard time even believing that relationship. Yes, she spent 2 months with her but the relationship was forced and lacking.

I definitely think this is a book for some.

I am one to say give everything a chance, you never know what you are going to fall in love with. I will be continuing the series. I do think there is room for growth and development of the story and character.
