Kristin Hannah continues to write compelling, yet depressingly bleak stories. Her portrayal of PTSD and the resulting SUD is trauma porn albeit consistent with what I have seen in the homeless, DV and SPMI populations I have worked with for the last 20+ years. I can only pray she uses the proceeds of this book to support women's veteran's mental health and chemical dependency programs.
Very well written- 4.75 stars, Complex characters 4.75 stars, no likeable characters outside of Frankie and her two besties. I felt like the book kept on going so she could make another bad thing happen to poor Frankie. Then, Hannah ended it so abruptly it feels like she needed to make a happy ending. Maybe she couldn't think of a complex or satisfactory resolution for her character, much like the resolution of the Vietnam war. I can't recommend it but 253, 147 people voted it the goodreads best historical fiction of 2024.
