The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

5.0

Oh Angie Thomas, where have you been all my life!

I can't believe I've only just read this book after having it on my bookshelf for so long, I'm kicking myself. I have no idea where to begin, it gave me so much to think about and so many emotions throughout.

I'll be completely honest, its taken me two days to write a review for this book as I had written one out, deleted it, written it out again and deleted it until I realised there's simply no words to convey the powerful message in this book. Systematic racism is very much still on-going now and it angers me. This book angered me in ways I couldn't comprehend but now I do. I could sit here and say how amazing Thomas' writing is and how I couldn't find a single flaw (all very much true), but I know I won't be able to give it justice.

Everyone needs to read this book, no matter who you are. This story is one of many and they need to be read. I know for a fact that I'll be reading more from Thomas and specifically this genre of books, to expand my knowledge and awareness

This book is about using your voice and shows the power behind doing so, its about never backing down, even if its scares you. Its about telling the stories of those who can't. The New York City Times quoted the city's mayor on Monday - "Being black in America should not be a death sentence" and you're damn right #blacklivesmatter
