Minecraft: The Island by Max Brooks

Max Brooks, son of Mel Brooks, has written some great books (I highly recommend World War Z.) This was not one of them. To be fair, I don't know how you'd manage to write this book in a way that an adult would want to read it. If you've played Minecraft, this is basically a book about what would happen if someone had been teleported into that world & had to try to figure out how to break blocks & build crafting tables. It's just really tedious. You know how your first time playing, you likely had to dig yourself a hole & block yourself in for the night to prevent yourself from dying? Yep...gonna read about it. The discovery that trees don't fall down if you mine the bottom block? That if you destroy all the oak trees around your spawn point, you remove an easy source of food (apples)? That if you go too far away from your base, it's easy to get turned around & you freak out a little? Yeah....not really gripping as a book. I got less than 50 pages in & then started flipping to random parts, even to the end. It's all the same.

If you're around 10 yrs old, this could be an awesome book...really envisioning yourself in the world. Kids who love Minecraft are likely to love this book.

As an adult, it read like the world's longest walkthru and was boring. This is no Robinson Crusoe. (Even HE had Friday. This guy just talks to his cows & chickens...and apparently his sanity erodes because they eventually start responding back at him.)

If you're an adult, skip this. Go read World War Z.
