The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera
5.0

adam silvera, you’ve broken my heart yet again, you evil genius.

i went into the book not expecting much for many reasons: the first book (despite making me cry my eyes out) just wasn’t as well written as his other books, i’ve felt like i’ve grown out of sad YA romance, and i was listening to it as an audiobook. but i was a fool to think i could survive another one of silvera’s books without a runny nose and bloodshot eyes.

once i got past the cheesy YA writing in the beginning (something that was also a problem with the first deathcast book), i realised i was falling in love with the world that was unfolding before me. adam really knows how to get into the heart of the story and hit you right in the feels. the world he was building was so colourful and, like the last book, we got to see into the lives of not only the MCs but also those around them. he does so gracefully, without the plot getting too messy or crowded and seeing it all tie together at the end was so satisfying and yet so so heartbreaking.

i do think that my opinion of this was swayed by the way i read it, i’m not sure i would have been able to push through the writing if i were reading it with my eyes. but in audiobook form, the cheesiness was a form of welcome relief from the sobbing.
