Return to Zero by Pittacus Lore

2.0

Frankly disappointing. Not because the plot went in an unexpected direction, which it did, and not in a good way, but because the wrong characters were focused on most of the time. Instead of focusing on the pacifist who can blow stuff up, or the abused villains son, or most importantly the shapeshifter that can’t stand her own face, we keep focusing on the white bread healer that looks like a dead love interest for no reason. But this time, she’s angry, which makes her so much more interesting. The awkward love triangle here between John, Taylor and Kopano is extra awkward given the rumors that he’s dating Marina. Then there’s five making the same exact mistakes his character development in previous books had him move past. The authors handling of each characters is juvenile and makes me wonder if any book reading took place before writing.
