Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

2.0

This was my first Brontë book, and wow, this was a slog. I'm glad I listened to the audio, as Joanne Frogatt does a wonderful job, and I don't think I could have persevered if I was reading myself. These characters are so dismal, every one of them dislikable (except perhaps Ellen, the narrator, although she too often makes dubious decisions and does little to interfere in the abuse all around her (I know she is hired help and not in much of a position to do so, but still)). I read this just after reading Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and every character made disagreeable Mr. Darcy seem like a the most amiable, gracious, and romantic man in the world.
