Deathbird Stories by Harlan Ellison

4.0

This is one of his most cerebral set of stories. Often describing the deep and dark thoughts within a person in the extreme of situations. This book deals with different forms of god within the world and how it manifests in life. Some of my favorite stories here are "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs", The Downhill Side", Delusion for a Dragon Slayer", and "Paingod". The gods we deal with are often the gods of technology, the city, depression, vice, and forgotten gods. It's a good read with many of his best and most graphic internal workings of the human psyche.
