Apprentice of Magic by K.M. Shea
5.0

Good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This rates a good 5/5 on the trauma scale, so it’s lucky that the next book is already available.

Angelique is blessed, or cursed as she believes, with war magic. As much magic as she holds, people fear her, which is why she’s surprised when Enchanter Evariste takes her on as his apprentice.

Angelique was so annoying for much of this book (which takes place over the course of twelve years or so), simply because she wouldn’t accept her magic. I swear I was more frustrated with her than Evariste was, but as with all good fairytales, it’s very much a means to an end.
This is the first book in the series, but it does reference a few characters and stories from the author’s other Fairytale series- but not so much that it spoils anything. It does end on a pretty epic cliffhanger, and you’ll want to see that end quickly.

It has a different feel from Kitty’s Magiford world (urban/contemporary fantasy), as we find ourselves in a decidedly traditional fantasy setting and with a number of familiar fairytale people. That doesn’t mean it’s bad though, in fact it’s entertaining, with an intriguing world and fascinating heroine. I can’t wait to see Angel get her wings (so to speak) as she finally takes control of her future.
An enthralling read for fantasy and fairytale fans.
