I would put this into the category of Coraline - wildly fantastic and scary at the same time. Wasps, Hives, a mystery knife sharpener, and Jon Klassen's dark illustrations just combine for an eerie tale about a baby. Steve's attempt to save the family's real baby kept me turning pages. No super moral lesson here except the weakness of humans to want perfection, and to say yes to something before they think of all of the ramifications.
