The five stars should tell you I enjoyed this story for many reasons. I hope I can articulate them all. I'm not a poetic writer, but I do enjoy reading poetic prose. Shatterproof is laced with it, here and there a little distractedly so, for me. But that's me. It just means I back up and read that long wordy sentence again, more carefully. This wasn't a hardship.
I enjoyed very much how atypical the fantastic elements are. We're, with Saint, far out on a thread of it, spinning, trying to understand what's going on. What we learn is very specific, too. This is a close, personal tale. I love every nuance of each character, and how they're drawn to and repelled by each other. And why. All the whys.
I read one review in which this was called a "very dark" story. I didn't find it dark so much as moody, as befits the topics of depression and suicide and death and responsibility and guilt, and autonomy. And love. And giving, and taking. And accepting. It is beautifully told and worth reading, maybe especially if you want to understand a little better some of what can drive people to do bewildering things. We can all use more understanding.
