Small Favors by Erin A. Craig
4.0
Overall Rating: 3.9 (rounded up to 4) out of 5 stars.
‘Small Favors’ was another re-read on my autumn TBR list and wow, did I enjoy this almost as much as I did the first time. It’s been a little over a year since I’ve first read this, so I still remembered some of the twists the story had. Still, Erin Craig’s horror writing style grabbed me- hard. The amount of detail she uses makes me shiver each time- truly something disturbingly written, down to every droplet of blood. Even the building suspense to discovering what has gone wrong in Amity Falls held me at the edge of my seat- and I already knew what would happen! She doesn’t shy away from writing these horrible scenes, from killing characters off and showing the horrors of humans at their lowest, and that’s I really like about this book.
One thing I wish would have flowed as well as her first book were the characters. I always love having a good character to follow through the story with and a good character so horrible, you’re given no reason to like them at all. I love it when authors aren’t afraid to write these kinds of hatable characters. But even still, I felt like the Downings were lacking a bit. They felt a little bland or just- too stuck in their own trope-role if that makes any sense. Whitaker also wasn’t too outstanding- neither were other residents in town. I, personally, did have a little trouble keeping everybody in line and was very thankful for the ‘important families’ guide Craig gives in the front of the book. The characters still gave to the story in their own way though, even more so after the growth and [ climatic ending event ] that happened.
All in all, Erin Craig has been one of my most favorite authors for books that give me chills. She has 3-4 more in the works and I am beyond excited to start getting more details on them soon! I can’t wait to see what other little horrors and dark creatures await in her next read.
