crufts 's review for:
La Belle Sauvage
by Philip Pullman
adventurous
dark
mysterious
tense
slow-paced
Strong character development:
Complicated
Loveable characters:
Complicated
Diverse cast of characters:
Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus:
No
Good, but too little happened for the length of the book (560 pages).
I don't mean in terms of action and characters doing things (there's plenty of that!) but in terms of unraveling the central mysteries of the story (what is the CCD planning, why is everyone trying to capture Lyra, etc).
There's a little character development as the protagonist grows up slightly, but not much.
See my review of the sequel here: The Secret Commonwealth.
