Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk
3.0

Humorous horror is a difficult balance to strike. Palahniuk pulls it off in an impressive way though in this collection of short stories that reminded me of a perverse re-imagining of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. 17 creatives gather for what they believe to be a writer’s retreat in an old theatre. They each have delusions of grandeur and believe they will walk away fabulously rich and famous as they recount stories both TO one another and ABOUT one another. These stories are mostly vile and upsetting in the worst of ways that also were intensely original.

If this book was one degree less weird or had 5 fewer characters I think it would have been a masterpiece. There was a little bit too much going on but the core of what was there was amazing and made me excited to dive deeper into more Palahniuk.
