War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

5.0

Two hundred pages into this book, I wasn't sure I would finish. I took a break and read another book for a book club. After Christmas, I picked up War and Peace again and found myself completely immersed in the Russian setting and the war of 1812. Tolstoy's characters are amazingly human. The stories are fascinating and I was constantly moved by his understanding of the human condition in joy, love, mourning and misery. The romances are rich, heartrending and delightful. I did find some of the war parts slow and the Tolstoy tends to pontificate a little too much, but he is wise. I especially related to and agree with his opinions on marriage, love and death.

I read the translation by Rosemary Edmonds and I liked her style and the language.
