In Marie Lu's finely-crafted fantasy world of Kenettra, Adelina Amouteru is a malfetto, a child who suffered from the blood fever epidemic and survived, but with "markings." Malfettos are believed to be bad luck and therefore are discriminated against. Some of them, called the Young Elites, have special powers, with each one unique. Adelina has never discovered any special powers in herself, but she is about to find out that she does indeed have some. She needs then to see if she can learn to control her powers to help the cause of the Young Elites.
