Oh boy, where do I even start with this book?
I had seen soooo many people talk about this book prior to reading it that my expectations were sky-high. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype I or others had created. I’m not saying that I didn’t enjoy it, because I did, but it just didn’t hook me like other books have.
The story follows Far, who is practically guaranteed to be a Recorder and all he has to do is pass his final exam sim. I think you know how things turned out, it didn’t go as planned. His sim was hacked by someone and it ultimately resulted in him failing his exam and ending his career as a Recorder, or so he thinks. He and his friends are recruited by Lux Julio to travel through time and steal valuables from the past! On one of their missions, Far comes face-to-face with the person who “ruined” his life. Although he’d like nothing more than to leave that behind him, he must learn to work with her for the fate of his world depends on it.
What I enjoyed the most were the characters. They each had such different personalities and brought something unique to the story.
Far – Our commander is soooo full of sass and bravery and preciousness. He cares so much for his crew and will do anything to protect them.
Priya – She was so great to read about! She’s the medic on board and happens to have a passion for music. I loved reading about her and Far’s relationship because it was well established, meaning that they had already been dating for 11 months, and there wasn’t any other love interest, making for a cute and fluffy read!
Imogen – Im was my favorite character to read about hands down! I absolutely adored her personality and her care-free attitude (when it didn’t involve Gram that is)! Also, she chalks her hair a different color everyday and has a red panda as a pet soooo BONUS POINTS!!!
Gram – He is Far’s best friend and the Invictus engineer. He’s incredibly smart but completely oblivious at the same time haha.
Eliot – You do not want to mess with her lol. I wasn’t really fond of her at the start but she grew on me
I also enjoyed the whole time traveling aspect because it was entertaining to read about other time periods and specific events such as the Titanic.
Now let’s talk about what I didn’t like. For one, it failed to captivate me. Although the characters were fantastic, and you know how much I LOVE my characters, I’d find myself going days without reading because I wasn’t invested or interested in the plot. This may have been the result of me going into a mini reading slump but I can’t really do anything about that now. I also would have liked to learn more about the world and the technology that they developed.
Overall, I did enjoy Invictus but it did fall flat at times for me. I’d definitely recommend this book if you enjoyed The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell and/or Doctor Who!
