I love you Janice but ?????????????

Firstly, and I’m not marking this as a spoiler because I believe the people need to know, there is NO murder mystery in this. That little cover blurb “It’s time to solve the murder of the century,”: a lie! This is a book about secret codes.

Secondly, having a single main character and a story told from basically only his point of view really hinders what’s best about Hallett’s writing. The Appeal was great because of its number of characters and perspectives. This book is quite limited.

Thirdly, no explicit spoilers here but I’ll mark them all the same,
why wait until the last 50 pages to reveal everything? It’s the kind of pacing that drives me bananas in mystery novels, where you’re just confused for 90% of it and then get and explanation and sent on your way.
Explicit spoilers begin here
bro I just have no idea what’s going here. I laughed aloud at all the hiding the gold from the Nazi double agent shit and then that turned out to be fake and then it turned out to maybe have been real??? I just,,, whatever at this point.

Okay read, reminds me of BBC’s Sherlock the way it keeps promising you it’s gonna get good or they’re gonna solve a mystery and then it just devolves into bullshit.
