It took me a while to get through this book, and I wonder if reading a translated version of the original (obviously out of necessity, as I do not speak Japanese) at least in part contributed to a feeling of ‘sluggishness’ through its quieter moments. That being said, this book shines when describing the dishes as they grow in complexity alongside our protagonist in such a way that allows someone with an unrefined palette (like myself) to understand what might be so exciting about simply adding a bit of butter to a meal. I also enjoyed the insight into the different social and cultural standards of Japan, particularly in relation to gender, and appreciate the notion of radicalness through non-conformity and self-acceptance.
